On Friday, an Abeokuta Magistrates' Court sentenced Akeem Quadri, 20, to 14 years in prison for sexually abusing a seven-year-old girl.
Mr Quadri, who had pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge, was found guilty of sexual abuse.
In her decision, Chief Magistrate I.O. Abudu stated that the prosecution established beyond a reasonable doubt that the convict was guilty as charged.
She found the prosecution's evidence credible and sentenced Mr Quadri to 14 years in prison without the option of a fine.
During the trial, the officer in charge of the case, ASC Adeola Oluwaseun of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), told the court that the convict committed the crime on June 9 at Bode Olude area in Abeokuta.
According to the prosecutor, the convict is a bricklayer who was working in an uncompleted building around the area.
She said the convict went to buy sachet water from the little girl’s mother’s shop and then asked her to bring a cup for him where he was working.
“When the victim went to give him the cup, the convict lured the girl (name withheld) into the uncompleted building, asked her to pull off her pants and sexually abused her by penetrating through her anus.
She said the convict was arrested by officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) who handled the case.
She, however, said that the offence committed contravened the Child Rights Laws of Ogun 2006.
