A police officer who is accused of fatally shooting a motorcyclist named Alabi Stephen, also known as the Doctor, in the area of Sabo Market in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has been detained.
Abiodun Alabi, the commissioner of the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the officer's detention on Wednesday.
Alabi said that the command has started an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Stephen's death.
He said: “There was a problem because some of the Okada riders did not want the enforcement to take place, maybe because of the highhandedness of the police.
“So, they reacted, and in the course of that, there was a scuffle.
“According to the information I got, they (motorcyclists) were trying to dispossess the policeman of his arm, and in the course of doing that, there was a discharge.
“The matter is being investigated and if the officer is culpable like I said before, we will not allow anybody to take anybody’s life unlawfully because life is sacred.
“If there is evidence that he actually did it intentionally, he will face the music.
“He is currently being detained as we are investigating the case.”
