Olusegun Obasanjo: I could’ve gotten third term if I wanted

Former Nigerian leader Olusegun Obasanjo described himself as having the audacity to seek election to a third term in office.

Obasanjo made this declaration on Thursday while giving a speech at a virtual gathering hosted by the Africa Leadership Group.

I never sought a third term, he said. I would have got a third term if I'd wanted one. I have the audacity to know how to acquire it.

Obasanjo asserted that he had no intention to run for a third term as president of the nation, refuting claims to the contrary.

Obasanjo argued for a revision of the 1999 constitution although acknowledging that there is no perfect constitution.

He stated, “Some people blame the constitution for everything in Nigeria. Of course, our constitution is not perfect, and there is no constitution that is sacrosanct and it can be amended.”

According to Obasanjo, one of the things that should be included in the updated constitution is the distribution of authority more evenly across the country.

In the meantime, the former president has stated that he will not be joining the campaign train of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, stating that he has already done everything he can by writing his endorsement.

You may recall that Obasanjo endorsed Obi for the presidency in his New Year’s address to the people of Nigeria. The subject of the speech was “My appeal to all Nigerians, particularly young Nigerians.”

Obasanjo stated, “I am not in campaign train. I’ve used the benefit of my experience, and I’ve put it.

“I do not belong to any political party. I will not join any campaign training. I’ve said what is best for the country.”

Regarding the characteristics that should be included in an ideal candidate for the presidency of Nigeria, Obasanjo stated, “Nigeria is where we are because of leadership.

“We must decisively look for men and women who have the character, attributes, skill and attitude that we need for leadership, that will deliver in this country.”

However, the former president stated that he did not have any regrets about governing Nigeria.
