The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, Mr Mele Kyari, was called before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions on Friday about the N48 billion pipeline surveillance contract in the Niger Delta.
The contract was given by the NNPC to a company connected to Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, a former commander of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).
Together with other stakeholders in the areas where the oil pipelines are located, the company is anticipated to complete the N4 billion per month contract that spans the states of Delta, Ondo, Imo, Rivers, and portions of Bayelsa.
Following a petition from the Isoko community, which claimed that their young men were not included in the multibillion-naira project, the Senate committee called the NNPC chief.
The Isoko people claimed that they were totally disregarded in the contract award in a petition addressed to the Senate on their behalf by Stanley Okonmah on their behalf of Interested Isoko Youth Groups.
People specifically encouraged the Senate to look into the situation and the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited and Minister of Petroleum Resources to fix the error.
They wanted the Isoko nation's stakeholders to select the business that would receive the pipeline surveillance contract from the NNPC.
Senator Ayo Akinyelure, the chairman of the Senate panel, stated that the GCEO of the NNPC was being called before the Senate to reassure the Isoko people that the organisation would take the necessary action to prevent economic sabotage by the enraged youths.
To prevent any hostilities in the Niger Delta region, Akinyelure urged the head of NNPC to appear before his panel on January 25.
