Army probes alleged murder-suicide in Sokoto
The Nigerian Army has started investigations into the shooting incident that occurred at Forward Operations Base Rabbah, Sokoto State. According to a statement by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, a soldier killed his colleagues and then shot himself immediately. The incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, March 5, 2023, when troops were deployed for internal security operations.

The statement further revealed that the circumstances leading to the incident could not be immediately ascertained. The Nigerian Army expressed concern over the rare and unusual incident and has constituted a Board of Inquiry to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The General Officer Commanding, the 8 Division Nigerian Army, and Commander of Joint Task Force Northwest Operation Hadarin Daji, Major General Godwin Mutkut, alongside other senior officers have visited the location.

The incident has caused panic among residents and other security agencies operating in the area. The soldier's motive for the attack remains unknown.

The army authorities have assured the public of their commitment to the safety and security of the people, and to ensure that such incidents do not reoccur in the future.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased soldiers have been deposited at the morgue of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto. The families of the deceased soldiers have been contacted and informed of the incident.

The army has appealed to the public to remain calm and not to panic, as measures are being put in place to ensure the safety and security of the people.

The incident is coming barely a week after the army launched Operation Hail Storm 3 to flush out bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal elements in the northwest region. The operation was launched after several attacks by bandits in the region that led to the loss of lives and property.
