Providing details on the situation, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) informed reporters that a driver operating a Peugeot 406 with registration number YLA 681 FS was swept away by the forceful flood currents on Imo Street within the estate. Fortunately, four other individuals were rescued and are presently in stable condition.
As the rainfall intensified, residents of Trademore Estate were observed valiantly attempting to safeguard their lives and salvage whatever belongings they could from their now-submerged homes. Unfortunately, the estate has become all too familiar with the devastating effects of flooding over the years, resulting in the loss of both lives and properties valued at billions of naira.
However, during the rainy season of 2022, occupants of the estate experienced a respite as they remained unscathed by floods despite the heavy rainfall that occurred throughout the year. This fortunate occurrence can be attributed to the re-engineering remediation work undertaken by the estate's owner. Measures such as the expansion of gutters and the demolition of buildings situated along flood plains were implemented to mitigate the risk of flooding.
At the time of compiling this report, various stakeholders were actively responding to the flood crisis in Trademore Estate. Among the organizations involved in the relief efforts are NEMA, Fire Service, FCT FEMA, Red Cross, and the Federal Ministry of Environment's Flood Department. Their combined efforts aim to provide immediate assistance and support to the affected residents, ensuring their safety and well-being in the aftermath of this tragic event.
