Nobel Laureate Backs Davido, Rejects Apology Demand

Renowned literary icon, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has voiced his support for Davido amidst the controversy surrounding a music video of his signee, Logos Olori, which was shared on Twitter. The music video depicted people praying and dancing in front of a mosque, leading to accusations of disrespect towards Islam. Davido later deleted the video snippet in response to the backlash, but some Muslims still demanded an apology from the singer.

In defense of Davido, Prof. Soyinka criticized former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El Rufai, for making derogatory comments about Christians in the past without facing demands for an apology. Soyinka also highlighted the tragic incident of Deborah Yakubu, a Christian college student who was lynched by a mob of Muslim students in Sokoto last year over alleged blasphemy. He emphasized that Davido's music was not responsible for such acts of violence.

In a statement, Prof. Soyinka expressed his views on the matter: "No apology is required, None should be offered. Let us stop battening down our heads in the mush of contrived contrition – we know where contrition, apology, and restitution remain clamorous in the cause of closure and above all – justice. Such apologies have not been forthcoming."

The literary icon urged the nation to remember past instances where derogatory comments were made against different religious groups and emphasized the need to address issues of justice and closure rather than demand unnecessary apologies.
