Peter Obi Urges Diplomatic Restoration in Niger Republic Crisis
Former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), has emphasised the importance of allowing the people of Niger Republic to swiftly transition back to a representative democratic government through their national institutions.

He expressed his view amid the ongoing political turmoil in Niger Republic, considering it a matter of critical national interest and security for Nigeria.

Obi stressed the significance of prioritising dialogue and diplomatic solutions to reach a resolution that minimally disrupts Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

He acknowledged the various parties involved and their differing perspectives but maintained that diplomacy should remain the foremost approach to resolving the crisis.

In a statement released on his verified social media platform on Sunday, Obi commended the mediating efforts of Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, His Eminence Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, and His Royal Highness Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

He highlighted the pivotal role of diplomatic dialogue among strategic stakeholders in finding a solution.

Obi emphasised the importance of allowing the people of Niger to regain their democratic governance swiftly through their national institutions.

He called for comprehensive support from national, regional, and international entities to aid Niger's return to normalcy.

While discouraging the spread of military dictatorships in West Africa, he stressed the need to prioritise multilateral diplomatic mechanisms over armed intervention.

The former governor proposed the establishment of a concerted multilateral coalition involving Nigeria, ECOWAS, the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN) to facilitate a systematic return to a democratic constitutional order in Niger.

Obi reiterated the essential leadership role Nigeria must play in this process to ensure a peaceful and stable resolution to the crisis.
