The management of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, has taken disciplinary action against five students, rusticating them for a period of two semesters. This decision was approved by the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Asomwan Sonnie Adagbonyin, as reported by Prime 9ja Online.
The rustication of the five students was announced in the university's news bulletin titled, 'Special Release: Rustication', dated February 23, 2024. The bulletin was signed by O.O Ohikhena, Deputy Registrar (Senate), on behalf of the Acting Registrar.
The rusticated students, as listed in the bulletin, are Musa Abraham from the Department of Sociology, Obhaluagbon Nosakhare David from the Department of Civil Engineering, Ehizokhale Favour Abu also from the Department of Civil Engineering, Chukwuemeka Prosper Orevia from the Department of Biochemistry, and Omogui William.A.M from the Department of History and International Studies.
The bulletin did not provide specific reasons for the rustication of these students. However, it stated that the students were rusticated for two semesters, effective from the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic session.
Furthermore, the Deputy Registrar (Senate) added that the results of the affected students would be withheld for the four semesters of their rustication period. These results would then be released after the conclusion of the second semester of the 2024/2025 session.
The rustication letter read: “I am directed to inform you that the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof A.S Adagbonyin, has, on behalf of Senate, and in exercise of the powers conferred him by the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma Law 1999 (as amended) and other regulations enabling him to act in that behalf, has approved that, the underlisted be rusticated for a period of two semesters."
The letter further clarified that any examinations taken and work done during the period of rustication would count, as the students were not on suspension. It concluded by informing all relevant university organs and the students' sponsors of this decision for their information and necessary action.
