Nigeria Police Revise Tinted Glass Permit Procedures

In a bid to enhance national security and combat criminal activities linked to the misuse of tinted glass, the Nigeria Police Force has concluded a comprehensive review of the procedures governing tinted glass permits.

These permits were previously prohibited in June 2022 due to widespread concerns about the role of tinted glass in facilitating various illicit activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, illegal firearms transportation, and human trafficking.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this in a statement. He explained that the prohibition was instated due to the role tinted glass played in facilitating various nefarious activities.

With the impending lifting of the ban, stringent measures are being put in place to prevent abuse and ensure strict adherence to the guidelines governing the issuance and use of tinted glass permits. As part of these measures, nationwide ICT Analysts and Enforcement Officers are scheduled to undergo extensive training on February 29, 2024, in preparation for the resumption of tinted glass permit issuance.

This training initiative aims to equip ICT Analysts and Enforcement Officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to oversee the registration process, provide guidance to registrants on portal usage where necessary, address public complaints, and enforce compliance effectively.

The proposed tinted glass permit will incorporate distinctive features designed to enhance enforcement efficiency and security. These features include a QR code linked to a central database for instantaneous verification, unique serial numbers correlated with vehicle and owner particulars, and a digital hologram ensuring authenticity and integrity, among other measures.

It is crucial to underscore that the guidelines governing the issuance of tinted permits and the use of tinted glass will strictly adhere to the provisions outlined in the MOTOR VEHICLES (PROHIBITION OF TINTED GLASS) ACT 1991, as well as other relevant extant laws.

This strategic approach underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to prioritising public safety while upholding individual rights and national security imperatives. The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to providing the general public with updates on the implementation of the revised tinted glass permit issuance process, thereby ensuring transparency and accountability in its efforts to uphold internal security.
