Reconstruction Begins on Century-Old Zaria Mosque

The reconstruction of a mosque in Zaria, Kaduna State, which collapsed in August 2023, commenced on Monday with the demolition of the old edifice, a structure with over a century's history.

The Emir Abdulkarim Central Mosque in Zaria had partially collapsed, resulting in the tragic loss of eight lives and leaving scores of worshippers with various degrees of injuries.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Emir of Zazzau, Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, took decisive action by constituting a committee of experts and professionals to oversee the reconstruction of the collapsed mosque. The committee is led by former Vice-President Muhammadu Namadi Sambo.

In October 2023, a fundraising event was held at the Shehu ‘YarAduwa Centre in Abuja to raise funds for the reconstruction of the mosque. The event saw a promise of three billion naira (N3 billion) in donations, with Alhaji Abdussamad Rabiu, the Chief Launcher and Chairman of BUA Groups, contributing a generous two billion naira (N2 billion) to the cause.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who was present at the fundraising event, directed that the project should be completed within two years.

As the demolition of the old edifice marks the beginning of this ambitious project, the residents of Zaria look forward to the completion of the new mosque that will stand as a testament to their resilience and unity.
