The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, is in mourning following the tragic death of popular actor Junior Pope Odonwodo, widely known as Jnr Pope. The actor passed away this afternoon while on a film set in Asaba, the capital of Delta State.
According to sources, the unfortunate incident occurred during a boat trip. The boat capsized, leading to the drowning of Junior Pope and two other actors whose identities are yet to be confirmed. His body was recovered and immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was sadly confirmed dead.
The Chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) in Delta State, Emma Onyemeziem, confirmed the tragic news to Vanguard. He stated that the actor’s body had been deposited in the morgue.
This heartbreaking incident is the latest in a series of tragedies that have befallen Nollywood this year. Just last month, the industry lost ace thespians such as Mr. Ibu and Sisi Quadri. Earlier in the year, in January, Deji Aderemi, popularly known as Olofa Ina, passed away. In February, Ethel Ekpe, well-known for her role as ‘Segi’ on the Nigerian Television Authority sitcom, ‘Basi and Company’, also passed away.
The loss of Junior Pope Odonwodo is a significant blow to Nollywood, and he will be deeply missed by his colleagues, fans, and the entire film industry. His contributions to Nollywood will not be forgotten, and his memory will live on through the many roles he portrayed on screen.
