The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced September 12 as the date for the signing of the Peace Accord for the Edo Governorship election in Benin City. This was disclosed by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at an extraordinary meeting with political parties on the 2024 Edo governorship election in Abuja.
Yakubu explained that the early signing of the peace accord would enable the National Peace Committee to monitor compliance with the code of conduct signed by parties, candidates, and other stakeholders. He urged political parties to maintain decorum and civility in their campaigns and comply with INEC's regulations.
On the commission's preparations, Yakubu reported that INEC had concluded training security personnel and was finalizing logistics arrangements. He also mentioned that the printing of voters' registers and the installation of BVAS machines were almost complete.
Yakubu noted that 88 media organizations had applied for accreditation, but expressed concerns about compliance issues with polling and collation agents uploaded to the portal. He emphasized that INEC would only produce tags for uploads that meet the requirements of its regulations.
IPAC Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, urged INEC to remain neutral and ensure adequate election materials, particularly BVAS and IReV portals. He emphasized the importance of issue-based campaigns and respect for the sanctity of the ballot box.
