A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, has been abducted by unknown gunmen along Ejemekwuru Road in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State. The incident occurred on Sunday, 23rd March 2025, as he was travelling to attend a scheduled retreat for priests.
The Archdiocese of Owerri confirmed the abduction in a statement, urging the public to pray for his swift and safe release.
"We invite all Christ’s Faithful and all men and women of goodwill to earnestly pray for the quick and safe release of our priest," the statement read.
"We entrust our brother, Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, to the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Priests, for his speedy release from the hands of his abductors."
This abduction is the latest in a series of kidnappings targeting religious leaders in Nigeria.
In a separate development, security forces in Anambra State successfully rescued another Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Stephen Echezona, who had been kidnapped earlier the same day at a petrol station in Ichida. A coordinated operation involving the police, military, civil defence, and local vigilantes led to his rescue in Ihiala.
Law enforcement officials reported that the kidnappers, after engaging in a shootout with security personnel, abandoned their vehicle—a white SUV without licence plates—and fled the scene. Fr. Echezona was found unharmed.
Kidnappings for ransom have surged across southeastern Nigeria, with criminal groups increasingly targeting clergy, government officials, businesspeople, and students. Authorities continue to intensify efforts to combat the growing wave of abductions. (via Agenzia Fides)
