The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has inaugurated a new executive committee for its Sokoto and District Society, reflecting its ongoing commitment to upholding professional integrity, fostering innovation, and contributing to national development.

The investiture ceremony, held in Sokoto on Saturday, saw Alhaji Ganiyu Mustafa formally take over as the 6th chairman of the District Society, succeeding Ismail Suleiman, who was recognized for his dedicated service and strong leadership during his tenure.

ICAN’s National President, Haruna Yahya, represented by Zonal Vice Chairman Ibrahim Alkali, commended the outgoing executive team for maintaining high ethical standards and upholding the institution’s values. He stressed the crucial role district societies play in addressing professional challenges, strengthening community engagement, and promoting excellence across the board.

“Our district societies are not just administrative structures — they are the heartbeat of ICAN’s influence across the country, spearheading initiatives such as the Catch Them Young Programme and helping to foster a new generation of ethical financial professionals,” Yahya said.

The new leadership was encouraged to consolidate these efforts by embracing innovation, strengthening digital competency, and developing global partnerships.

ICAN’s ongoing initiatives were also highlighted during the event, including the digitization of its examination processes, the establishment of a Small and Medium Practice Academy, and the introduction of international certification pathways designed to keep members competitive on a global scale.

Representatives from the financial sector, academia, and the public service were in attendance, alongside ICAN members. The event also featured a keynote address by the Sokoto State Government, delivered by Bahir Abass, Commissioner for Commerce, Trade, and Industry, on behalf of Governor Ahmed Aliyu.

“On behalf of the Sokoto State Government, I congratulate the new chairman and his team. We appreciate the crucial role chartered accountants play in economic planning, financial discipline, and strengthening public trust. Our administration stands ready to collaborate with ICAN in promoting financial literacy, professional ethics, and capacity building — especially for micro, small, and medium enterprises,” Abass said.

The immediate past chairman, Ismail Sulaiman, commended his executive team for delivering on their responsibilities and encouraged young professionals to remain principled, disciplined, and eager to learn — describing the accounting profession as a key driver of good governance and sustainable development.
