Ex-President Buhari Dies at 82

LONDON — Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, aged 82, has died while receiving medical care at a clinic in the United Kingdom, according to an official family announcement issued on Sunday.

The news was disclosed by Garba Shehu, the late president’s former media aide, in a brief statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.
May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu wrote.

Buhari, who served two terms as Nigeria’s democratically elected leader between 2015 and 2023, was previously Head of State from December 1983 to August 1985 following a military coup. He had long been associated with a spartan public persona and a controversial, anti-corruption-driven governance style.

The former president had battled health complications in recent years and was known to have made several medical trips to the UK during his presidency.

Details to follow.
