The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has refuted a widely circulated message cautioning the public against opening a text link connected to its “Operation Go Cashless” programme, describing the alert as inaccurate.
In a statement released on Friday evening, the agency said it had become aware of what it termed “misinformation circulating in relation to SMS notifications” about the rollout date of the initiative.
According to FAAN, a separate advisory currently being shared on social media and messaging platforms urges recipients not to click on the official SMS link, alleging that it is fraudulent and intended to compromise bank accounts.
The authority rejected that assertion, stating that the claim is “false, misleading, and unfounded.”
“The official SMS notification informing members of the public about the implementation of Operation Go Cashless is legitimate and was duly disseminated by FAAN in partnership with MTN Nigeria as part of its nationwide public sensitisation campaign,” the agency said.
FAAN clarified that the Operation Go Cashless scheme will take effect from 1 March 2026. It maintained that the authorised text messages announcing the commencement date were valid communications issued through proper channels.
The agency explained that the notification forms part of preparations for the introduction of a fully cashless and contactless payment framework at airport payment points across the country. The system, it noted, is designed to standardise transactions and reduce reliance on physical cash within airport facilities.
The clarification comes amid growing public vigilance over digital fraud, as financial institutions and security agencies continue to caution Nigerians against interacting with suspicious links or unverified messages.
FAAN urged members of the public to ignore the counter-message and to verify information exclusively through its recognised communication platforms. The authority added that it remains focused on maintaining openness in its operations and ensuring the safety and confidence of airport users as the new payment structure is implemented.
