Worried by the growing spate of insecurity in the country, the Christian Social Movement of Nigeria has asked the National Assembly to immediately commence an investigation of the executive arm of government over the way it has handled the insecurity in the country.
The group also called for a new constitution to be drafted to replace the 1999 Constitution, which it said had been riddled with conflict.
Speaking at a press conference to commemorate the International Day of Religious Freedom recently, the Executive Secretary, CSMN, Pastor Bosun Emmanuel, lamented that the combined efforts of the Boko Haram terrorist group, Fulani militia, bandits and kidnappers had led to the loss of many lives as he called for an end to the killings.
The group also berated what it described as attacks against Christians, noting that they (Christians) ought to be commended for their determination to remain true to the forgiving tenets of their faith over the years. He noted that Nigeria was currently standing on tenterhooks and that for the government to remain insensitive would be working towards the total collapse of the Nigerian state.
“From the inception of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, the security architecture of the country has been skewed in favour of Fulani Muslims in violation of constitutional provisions,” he added.
He added, “Nigeria should return to true federalism and abolish the current unitary system, which concentrates power and security in the centre to the detriment of the federating units. All the federal appointments in violation of the Federal Character Principle in Section 14(3) of the constitution should be reversed immediately.
“Nigeria requires Truth and Reconciliation as the basis for healing and rebuilding trust amongst the divergent groups in the country. Without the truth, there can be no genuine forgiveness leading to reconciliation in the country.
“The National Assembly should commence the immediate investigation of the executive arm of government for the shoddy handling of security in the country.”
