UNILAG Council ratifies Ogunsola’s appointment as Acting VC
The University of Lagos' (UNILAG) Governing Council has approved Prof. Folasade Ogunsola's nomination as the institution's Acting Vice-Chancellor.

Her nomination was approved by the Council at a virtual meeting yesterday that was presided over by Dr John Momoh, who was appointed as the temporary Governing Council Chairman on Monday.

Following a request from the Federal Government that the university's troubled vice chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, and the Council's former chairman, Dr Wale Babalakin, step aside while a Special Visitation Panel it set up to examine the university's affairs, Ogunsola was chosen on Monday by the university's Senate.

It was ordered that Dr Momoh, who also serves as the National President of the UNILAG Alumni Association, call an emergency meeting to confirm Ogunsola's nomination and submit a report on the proceedings right away.

It was learned that the Federal Ministry of Education had instructed the National Universities Commission (NUC) to make preparations for the inauguration while informing the Registrar, Oladejo Azeez.

Professor Tukur Sa'ad (Chairman), Mr Victor Onuoha, Professor Ikenna Onyido, Professor Ekanem Braide, Professor Adamu Usman, Chief Jimoh Bankole, and Mrs Grace Ekanem are the other members of the panel.

Ogunsola, a professor of clinical microbiology, is the first woman to hold the esteemed post in the 58-year history of the organisation.

The 62-year-old, who held the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services) prior to her appointment, was up for the job against Prof. Ben Oghojafor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Sciences).

Prime 9ja Online also learned last night that six of the 14 members—including Azeez, who also disregarded the Federal Government's orders to facilitate the Senate and Council meetings—abstained from the Council meeting.

Mr Bayo Adarelegbe, who works in Dr Wale Babalakin's office, Rev. Yomi Kasali, Dr Saminu Dagai, who has been leading a subcommittee to look into the university's finances since 2017, Alhaji Alli Hussein, and Oluwarotimi Shodimu, a former registrar of the university, are some other people who aren't present at the meeting.
