Okezie Ikpeazu, the Governor of Abia State, has described Professor George Obiozor’s election as the new President-General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, as a “watershed” in Igbo land judging from the overwhelming support he enjoyed at the election held on Sunday in Owerri.
Governor Ikpeazu, in a message issued on Monday, by his Chief Press Secretary, Onyebuchi Ememanka, congratulated Professor Obiozor on his emergence, confiding that the renowned Diplomat would use his expertise to galvanize Ndigbo into a solid voice in national affairs.

Obiozor won the contest with a total of 304 votes.
His emergence follows the tenure expiration of the Chief Nnia Nwodo-led executive of Ohaneze Ndigbo
However, according to Governor Ikpeazu in the message, “Professor Obiozor’s election comes at a time when the Igbos are in a desperate search for consistent strong leadership which will galvanize us into a solid voice in national affairs. Professor Obiozor’s pedigree is unquestionable and his records unassailable. His reach is wide and his integrity, solid.
“I am confident that with his long years of experience in public service, especially his expertise in managing the challenges inherent in complex diplomatic relations, Professor Obiozor is well suited for the challenges that face the Igbos in a united Nigeria”.
Governor Ikpeazu also warmly congratulated the other members of newly elected Executive Committee of Ohaneze Ndigbo, especially the two sons of Abia State, Ambassador Okey Emuchay who emerged the new Secretary-General and Dr. Kingsley Dozie Lawrence who emerged the Vice President General of the apex organization.
He urged them to be good ambassadors of the State at the organization, assuring the new leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo of the continued support of the people and Government of Abia State in their assignment.
Governor Ikpeazu further thanked the outgoing President General, Chief John Nnia Nwodo for his services to the Igbo nation.
