Smart Adeyemi vs Ikpeazu: Senate receives advice on how to handle senator’s outburst

The member representing Isialangwa North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Darlington Nwokocha, has called on the Nigeria Senate to discipline Senator Smart Adeyemi representing Kogi West Senatorial district.

The lawmaker’s grouse for calling for Senate’s move against Adeyemi followed his verbal assault on the governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu.

Senator Adeyemi had during Senate plenary on Tuesday labelled Abia State Governor a ‘champagne drunkard’, but in a statement which Hon. Darlington Nwokocha sent to P9O Media on Friday, he described Adeyemi’s outburst as legislative idiocy, hence he should be disciplined.

Hon. Nwokocha said, the integrity of the upper legislative chambers would be at stake, if nothing is done to ‘derank’ Adeyemi, noting that his vituperation was in breach of legislative provisions.

“The brazen rascality and unguarded utterances of Sen. Adeyemi is a disgraceful desecration of the Hallowed chamber of the Nigerian Senate, and a threat to democracy.

“It’s a bastardization of the public image of the National Assembly, a breach of his legislative powers, privileges and code of conduct for public officers”, charging that in dealing with this matter, the Kogi lawmaker should be handed over to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Public Petitions and Privileges.

“This is a shocking act of legislative idiocy perpetrated by Sen. Smart Adeyemi (Kogi West), wherein he desecrated the sanctity and the treasured sacredness of the Senate and the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by his verbal assault on His Excellency, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, the Executive Governor of Abia State, the Government and good people of Abia State as a whole.

“Sen. Adeyemi during the Senate plenary of 23rd February 2021, while contributing to a motion, suddenly lost his lucid moment, digressed from the subject-matter before the Senate to recklessly claim that, the governor of Abia State is a drunkard.”

The lawmaker believes that the Kogi Senator has a mental issue, saying if he recovers, he should mobilise his kinsmen to Umuahia to seek forgiveness.

“One would have thought that Sen. Adeyemi, having served three terms in the Senate Chambers would have gathered the requisite wisdom required of a ranking Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Unfortunately, the Senator’s despicable outburst has shown that he lacks the necessary knowledge, qualifications and intellectual legislative decorum to continue to enjoy the privileges of a ranking senator.”
