Emmanuel Ikechukwu Umeonyirioha was appointed the University of Oxford’s first Igbo Language lecturer.

On Thursday night, Umeonyirioha made the news on his Twitter feed, noting that it was the first time the language would be taught at the university.

The speaker expressed gratitude for the chance and pledged to make the language and culture “known to the globe.”

“It is official that I am the first official Igbo Language lecturer at the number one university in the world, the University of Oxford.

“Our induction happened today by Marion Sadoux, Head of Modern Languages Programmes, the University of Oxford Language Centre.

“I am so happy and grateful for this opportunity. I promise to make the Igbo language and culture known to the world.” he tweeted.

The professor announced his first class on the subject, saying, “First class starts next week Thursday, 3-4pm, on 12 Woodstock Road.”
