Taliban restricts women from taking part in national issues

The Taliban in Afghanistan have declared that women are not allowed to attend mass gatherings to discuss matters of national unity.

Abdul Salam Hanafi, the interim deputy prime minister, revealed the new development on Wednesday.

The event, the first of its type since the Taliban took control in August 2021, would begin on Thursday, he said the state broadcaster RTA.

Hanafi responded that male delegates would speak for women when asked whether women would attend.

"The women are our mothers and sisters, and we greatly respect them. When their sons are present, it indicates that they are also somewhat involved in the gathering.

“Different people with different views are going to gather. This will be a positive step for stability in Afghanistan and strengthening national unity.’’

Hanafi said religious leaders had asked for the gathering to address an Islamic system of government and economic and social issues.
