Dr. Mohammad Barkindo, the secretary-general of OPEC, passed away on Tuesday night about 11 p.m. just a few hours after delivering his keynote speech at the official opening of the 21st NOG Conference and Exhibition, which is now taking place in Abuja.

Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPC Ltd., reaffirmed this.

This morning, Kyari, who first announced the news on Twitter, wrote: "We lost our esteemed Dr. Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo.

“He died at about 11pm yesterday, 5th July, 2022.

“Certainly, a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country, Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community.

“Burial arrangements will be announced shortly”.
