According to the Anambra State Government, work on Thursday to demolish buildings in Onitsha that had been built illegally had already started.
This information was revealed in a statement provided to journalists in Awka by Mr. Christian Aburime, press secretary to Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
Multiple illegal buildings along the canals in Fegge and the surrounding areas of Onitsha, according to the press secretary, would be demolished.
“The exercise which began from Bida Road by Modebe Avenue, Fegge, Onitsha, is expected to be extended to other parts of the town,”.
According to him, the demolition team in Onitsha's Fegge neighbourhood started working there after the developers and building owners were given a more than two-month notice in April of this year.
According to PRIME 9JA ONLINE, the Prophet Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere's security and generator houses, which are located in Onitsha nicknamed Odumeje, were among the affected buildings.
An eyewitness who requested anonymity said that the team overseeing the work physically assaulted the Prophet when he attempted to stop the workers from destroying his structures.
“When the team arrived in company of armed security operatives, we saw them struggling with the Prophet while the operator of the bulldozer was busy demolishing the structures,” the source said.
The source added that the demolition of the buildings built across Nwangene stream was taking place in accordance with the implementation of the Onitsha Urban Renewal Plan.
