The victims of the devastating flood tragedy in Abia State have requested immediate assistance from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), according to Senator Mao Ohuabunwa.

This came after the state's Agbaja, Okwoko, and Ukwa Nkporo local governments' millions of naira's worth of crops and property were devastated by hours-long heavy rains last weekend.

In an interview with reporters in Umuahia, the state capital, Ohuabunwa, who served as the senator for Abia North from 2015 to 2019, made this request of the state administration.

He expressed concern that diseases would spread if the government and agency failed to help the victims because the flood had a negative impact on their main water supplies for drinking.

The former federal representative for the Arochukwu/Ohafia federal constituency in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003 recalls that he once requested that the federal government dredge the river that flows through the neighbourhood to prevent such occurrences.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Senate in the district in the general election of next year expressed his sympathies for the victim and pledged to personally visit and sympathise with the victims.
