Security personnel have ringed the Lagos State Government Secretariat in anticipation of the Nigerian Labour Congress' (NLC) planned demonstration later today.
The NLC had on Monday urged its members and civil society organisations in Lagos State to turn out in large numbers on Tuesday morning to start the two-day protest in support of the professors who are on strike.
The instruction was given at a stakeholders' gathering at the union's secretariat in Yaba, Lagos state, by Mrs. Funmi Sessi, the state chairman of the NLC for Lagos.
According to Sessi, the drill was prepared to take place as part of the nationwide action on Tuesday and Wednesday.
She said: “We will be converging as early as 6:30 a.m. at Ikeja and take off by 7.00 a.m. to deliver a letter to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu in Alausa.
“The protest is to support ASUU in the ongoing strike, so we call on all affiliate members to come out en masse,’’ she said.”
However, as of the time this report was filed, the protesters had not yet made it to the secretariat, but security personnel were on the scene to keep an eye on the demonstration.
The presence of the security personnel, according to a police official who talked to newsmen under the condition of anonymity, was to uphold law and order rather than to harass protesters.
However, the police pleaded with people not to snap pictures right now.
