Due to a strike by ground personnel, German airline Lufthansa has cancelled more than 1,000 flights into and out of its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich.
134,000 passengers would be impacted by the cancellations between Tuesday and Friday, according to the carrier.
In order to exert pressure on the ongoing pay negotiations, Verdi, one of Germany's largest unions, has asked the roughly 20,000 ground staff members employed by Lufthansa to go on strike on Wednesday for one day.
Michael Niggemann, chief human resources officer at Lufthansa, criticised the decision.
He declared, "The early escalation after only two days of negotiations in a collective bargaining round that has thus far been fruitful is doing immense harm.
“It affects our passengers during the peak travel season, and it puts an additional heavy burden on our employees in an already difficult phase of air traffic,’’ he said.
