2023: Nigerians in US to hold presidential debates for Atiku, Peter Obi, Bola Tinubu, and others
Nigerians in the United States are planning a debate for all presidential candidates running in the February 25, 2023, presidential election.
The presidential debate, dubbed 'The Diaspora Listens,' is set to take place virtually on November 26th, according to a statement signed on Sunday by Olayinka DanSalami on behalf of the organizing committee.
The debate will be organized by the Organization for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN, Inc.) in collaboration with 15 other Nigerian partner organizations in the United States.
The presidential candidates, according to Mr DanSalami, have been invited to the debate.
"The United States is home to the largest number of Nigerian citizens and associations in the world." Despite cultural and linguistic differences, they are critical to our dear country's political and socioeconomic development," the statement explained. "We are also flying the Nigerian flag high as we have excelled in our various endeavors."
"Thus, we believe that in order to realize the Nigeria of our dreams, everyone must contribute their fair share." We believe that the 2023 presidential election is a critical and consequential election that has generated a great deal of enthusiasm, interest, and support among Nigerians living abroad."
Mr DanSalami stated that the election sparked "a patriotic clamour by Nigerians in the diaspora to have the presidential candidates speak to us."
He also stated that the debate would help keep Nigerians in the diaspora up to date on the candidates' platforms.
He went on to say that the event would give Nigerians in the diaspora a chance to hear directly from the presidential candidates about their intentions and aspirations.
The 'Diaspora Listens' event would also allow candidates to hear directly from diaspora constituents about their concerns, priorities, and what the president should do if elected in 2023.
"The organizers encourage all our Nigerians in the diaspora to'save the date' for this critical and important event," the debate's organizers said. "As we confirm participation from the presidential candidates, we will inform you of the format of the debates."
