Tobi Amusan of Nigeria has won gold in the women's 100m hurdles at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
The world champion successfully defended her title in the women's 100m hurdles final at Alexander Stadium on Sunday.
Amusan set a Games record of 12.30 seconds while also breaking other records, becoming the first world champion to win gold and the first Nigerian athlete to do so.
Amusan was one of the tournament's favorites after an impressive performance at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, the United States, where she broke multiple records to win Nigeria's first gold medal.
Having accomplished this feat on another continent, Amusan made certain to replicate it in Europe, demonstrating that it was no fluke and that it was indeed her time.
The 25-year-old set a new Games Record in Birmingham by winning gold in 12.30 seconds.
Amusan said after her triumph;
"To be honest, I believe in my abilities, but I did not expect to set a world record at these championships."
"The goal is always to execute well and win the game. As a result, the world record is a bonus. I knew I had it in me, but when I saw it on the screen after the semis, I couldn't believe it."
"I just tried to stay calm and do my best before the final. I took a deep breath, knowing that I had some objectives to achieve, and it worked pretty well. I knew it was fast, but not this fast."
Following in her wake were the Bahamas' Devynne Charlton (12.58secs) and England's Cindy Sember (12.59secs), both of whom finished some distance behind the eventual winner.
Nigeria now has 10 gold medals and 31 medals overall as a result of this result.
Team Nigeria is now just one gold medal short of the gold medal record set by the 1994 Commonwealth Games team (11 gold medals) and six medals short of the total medals record (37 medals).
Nigeria can and will hope for more with seven competitions still holding the potential for gold for the team on the final day and World Athletics Championship silver medallist Ese Brume still competing later today.
