According to the country's National Institute for Biomedical Research, a new case of Ebola virus infection has been verified in the city of Beni in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
On Monday, the announcement was made.
The World Health Organization had reported two days earlier that officials were examining a potential case in Beni following the death of a 46-year-old woman who had displayed symptoms consistent with the disease.
The case was connected to the 2018-2020 outbreak in North Kivu province, which killed over 2,300 individuals, according to genetic sequencing, the institute said in a statement.
Ebola can sometimes stay in survivors' eyes, central nervous systems, and bodily fluids for years before resurfacing.
Congo’s dense tropical forests are a natural reservoir for the Ebola virus, which causes fever, body aches, and diarrhoea.
Since 1976, the country has recorded 14 outbreaks.
