Due to FIFA's suspension of the Indian Football Federation, the nation would not be able to host the under-17 Women's World Cup in October as of right now.
The All India Football Federation has been suspended, according to the authority that governs football, "due to excessive influence from third parties, which constitutes a major violation of the FIFA regulations."
FIFA regulations state that federations must be free from judicial and political meddling.
As a result of the former leader Praful Patel serving through the end of his term without new elections, which the courts found unlawful, the AIFF is in turmoil and is being managed by administrators.
The process for the August 28 new elections got under way last week after the Indian Supreme Court accepted a schedule created by the administrators.
The U-17 tournament was scheduled to take place in India from October 11 to 30, but FIFA announced on Monday that it "cannot currently be staged in India as planned" due to the suspension.
In a statement, FIFA stated that it was "in constant and constructive contact with the Indian Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and is hopeful that a favourable resolution to the dispute may yet be obtained."
The men's and women's national teams of India are also suspended from competing in junior or senior international matches.
Former men’s captain Bhaichung Bhutia called the suspension “very harsh”.
“At the same time I think it’s a great opportunity to get our system right,” he told Indian sports news outlet Sportstar.
“And very important that all the stakeholders — the federations, state associations, sport ministry — come together to get the system right and everybody work for the betterment of the sport.”
India captain Sunil Chhetri had recently advised his players “not pay too much attention” to the FIFA ban threat as the situation was out of their control.
“The suspension will be lifted once an order to set up a committee of administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee has been repealed and the AIFF administration regains full control of the AIFF’s daily affairs,” FIFA said.
