According to the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), flooding in the state's Ajingi Local Government Area has resulted in the deaths of three people and the displacement of 495 families.
Dr. Saleh Jili, the Kano SEMA executive secretary, revealed this on Monday in Ajingi while giving aid to the victims, including the relatives of the three people who died.
Jili listed Toranke, Kara Malama, Chuna, and Balare among the affected regions.
He claimed that 495 people were impacted by the incident, which happened on August 3 and 4 after a lot of rain and resulted in three fatalities and one injury.
“On behalf of Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, we are here to condole with the victims and to distribute some materials to them.
“We hope the gesture will bring relief to them and alleviate their sufferings,” he said.
Rice, corn, cement, roofing sheets, nails, cooking oil, pillows, beans, and beds were among the supplies delivered.
Jili urged those who lived close to ponds and rivers in the state to leave the region and asked homeowners to always clear their drainages.
“If the rivers and ponds over flow, please vacate your houses and contact the agency to provide a place for you to stay, pending the end of the rainy season.
“We have deployed personnel to the communities affected for the conduct of damage assessment to enable it to develop comprehensive data and assist them,” Jili said.
Alhaji Sa'ad Ibrahim-Toranke, vice chairman of the Ajingi Local Government, praised the state and the organisation for the thoughtful act.
Malam Dayyabu Abdullahi thanked the organisation and Gov. Ganduje for the condolence visit and donation while speaking on behalf of the recipients.
“On Aug. 3 and 4, there was a heavy rainfall which lasted for more than 40 hours and made the walls of my house to collapse on my 4-year-old daughter,” he lamented.
