According to the Federal Government, Terminal Two at Lagos's Murtala Mohammed International Airport can handle 14 million passengers annually.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture, revealed this on Monday in Lagos while touring the terminal's cutting-edge amenities.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria's managing director, Capt. Rabiu Yadudu, reportedly showed the minister and a few journalists around the project.
The minister explained to the reporters that the new international terminal was created to enhance, not replace, Terminal One.
“That is why we were told that you could check in at one terminal and board at the other, so there is a handshake between the two terminals.
“It was the first terminal added to the original terminal since it was built some 40 years ago.
“The Terminal Two project started in 2013 and was completed by the present administration in 2022 under a bilateral agreement with the People’s Republic of China,’’ he said.
Mohammed further revealed that the new facility had generated over 10,000 chances for direct and indirect employment.
The building, which has been copied in the airports in Abuja, Port-Harcourt, Enugu, and Kano, according to him, is proof of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari's successes in infrastructure development.
The minister claimed that the Buhari administration's dedication to building roads, bridges, rails, water dams, and sea ports was unprecedented.
“ No administration in the history of Nigeria has done this much, especially at a time of scarcity of resources,” the minister said.
Speaking on the facilities and fittings in the terminal, the minister said it was a whole new experience especially in terms of aesthetics, comfort, free trolley services, hotel and premium lounges, friendly customer services and free wifi.
“I must confess it was an exhilarating experience comparable to what obtains anywhere in the world,’’ he said.
According to NAN, the new terminal contains seven passenger boarding bridges and 60 check-in booths, 16 departure desks, 28 arrival desks, and five belts for luggage retrieval.
There are eight security checkpoints, an eye-based lie detection machine, and a fully automated security control room with CCTV.
The team was also shown around the terminal, the Passport Control/Immigration Desks, the Visa on Arrival Point, and the Arrival Concourse to see how passengers arrived and left.
The amenities comprised a place for Muslims and Christians to pray as well as a ticketing point, passport control, and port health screening.
Yadudu said the terminal has been overdue for a while and praised the president for his promise to finish all ongoing projects.
