Dr. Nkechi Ikpeazu, the governor of Abia State's wife, announced a partnership
with the state's ministry of women's affairs and social development to
construct a sexual assault referral centre.
In her office at Government House in the state capital of Umuahia, Mrs.
Ikpeazu made this statement during the joint monthly meeting of the state
Gender-based Violence (GBV) Action Committee.
According to her, the centre would offer victims' privacy, emergency medical
care, forensic medical testing, treatment services, counselling, and
assistance for investigations and legal action.
The state's first lady advised the committee members to stay focused on
reaching the desired outcome while reiterating her resolve to lessen the
threat through other procedures she has established.
Commissioner for women affairs, Deaconess Rose Urenta, represented by the acting permanent secretary, Rev. Jane Omereonye commended the first lady for the concept and assured of their support.
The lead Action Response Committee representative, Mr Raymond Ukwa, commended Mrs Ikpeazu for her positive initiatives, saying the society must speak up against gender-based violence now.
