Rivals claim Senegal election victory

In Senegal, the main opposition and the ruling coalition both proclaimed victory in the legislative elections.

Aminata Toure, the coalition's leader and the president of President Macky Sall's party, said on television that the coalition had won 30 of the country's 46 administrative departments, giving it a thin legislative majority.

After making gains in the capital, Dakar, the opposition Yewwi Wallu alliance refuted her claims and asserted that it had a "comfortable majority."

The electoral commission must release preliminary overall results by no later than Friday.

President Sall will need to do well in these polls after the opposition won many key cities in the March municipal elections.

He has stated that he will choose the winning coalition's prime minister.
