Samuel Umtiti was so warmly welcomed in Lecce when he landed at the airport that he nearly broke down in tears. The World Cup champion from France played just once the entire previous season and is eager to get back to playing more frequently.
Speaking to SkySport Italia, Umtiti said, according to Mundo Deportivo, that he is at the appropriate club to restart his career.
“I spoke with the directors at Lecce and I realised that this was a club that would suit me well. I found the right words and I understood that we shared the same values. I think this is very important because I was looking for peace, humble people to work with in serenity.”
He admitted that he had endured a tricky time of late and was hoped to have something of a footballing rebirth at Lecce.
“I have a good feeling. I have had several difficult years and I want to rediscover the pleasure of playing football. I want to play, speak and live football… That is the most important thing for me. I hope to have a good season with Lecce.”
Then, he wished Barcelona a successful season and thanked the supporters for their support throughout the years.
Umtiti, who is now 28 years old, ought to be entering his peak. He hasn't displayed the same form that made him one of the top defenders in the world since the 2018 World Cup and a postponed knee procedure, though. Everyone will be hoping that he can revert to something akin to the Umtiti of old with regular football.
