The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Kwara Chapter, has vowed to start a peaceful demonstration and take over Kwara Airport if the ongoing ASUU strike is not called off.
During a press conference on Monday in Ilorin, Mr. Salman Issa, the chairman of NANS Kwara, stated that the organization's members were only awaiting instructions from the national secretariat.
Issa predicted that the remaining 36 states will follow the protest's instructions once the national organisation of students delivered them.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has been on a seven-month strike, and according to news reports, the Kwara NANS chairman was responding to the NANS's blockade of the Murtala Mohammed Airport by storming the airport in Lagos to put pressure on the government to end the strike (ASUU).
The national organisation of students had earlier threatened to halt operations at domestic and foreign airports nationwide starting on Monday owing to the walkout.
According to Issa, the South West states that make up Zone "D" of NANS were the only ones affected by the instructions to date.
According to him, the National President of NANS is employing the means of dialogue and engagement with necessary stakeholders to solve the lingering strike by ASUU.
“The directives of the protest are only binding on South West states which have been ongoing for the past five days.
“When given directive, we shall comply too,” he said.
Also speaking with newsmen, Isaac Adeleye, the General Secretary of Unilorin SUG, said the union is researching on best possible means to tackle the situation, assuring that they are deliberating on the matter.
“We are collaborating with the Kwara axis of NANS to see what will happen next,” he said.
