Five persons have been reported killed following a boating accident in Jigawa State's Martaba village's Gwaram Local Government Area.
The Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sale Tafida, through his public relations representative, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, verified the occurrence in a statement made available to journalists in Dutse yesterday.
The statement claims that on September 2 at around 1900 hours, a locally manufactured canoe carrying nine people reportedly capsized.
According to the report, the event took place at Martaba village in Jigawa State's Gwaram LGA while the passengers were making their way home after attending Juma'at prayer.
The statement claimed that a team of police officers was dispatched right away after receiving the report.
However, it claimed that four of the passengers—Bareji, 60, and three other villagers from Martaba—were saved alive.
“With the aid of local divers, five corpses were recovered. They are Lukateru, 60; Musa, 50; Sale, 50; Shuaibu, 60, and Dogo, 50, all of Darazau Herdsmen settlement camp in Bauchi State,” the statement said further
It said the corpses had been released to their relatives for burial, as the police commissioner condoled with the family and relatives of the deceased.
