According to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), 700 youngsters have been recruited to help clear drains in Borno, which is prone to flooding.
This was said in a statement made on Friday in Maiduguri by Mr Musa Aliyu, Programme Field Officer, Cash-for-Work project.
He said that the group has recruited young people for desilt exercises in the communities of Bulumkutu, Dala, and Bulabulin in the state's Maiduguri and Jere Local Government Areas.
According to him, the Borno Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA) had sent out 35 environmental workers to help with the exercise's efficient supervision and management.
“The total direct beneficiaries of the project is 735 with over 100,000 indirect beneficiaries across the three selected communities.
“The objective is to support and create temporary employment opportunities in the communities by engaging the most vulnerable to conduct a desilt exercise, and earn an income to enable them to cater for their needs,” he said.
He said that the project would increase peoples' social and economic well-being as well as reduce flooding, remove waste, and improve sanitation.
He claims that the group has cleaned more than 125 kilometres of the drain in the towns participating in the 2019 and 2021 activities.
