A committee has been established by the Kano State Executive Council to look into the immediate and long-term causes of the building collapse at the GSM Market on Beirut Road in the city.
Muhammad Garba, the state's commissioner for information, made this declaration while briefing reporters on the results of the council meeting that took place at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Kano.
He said that the committee's mandate was to look into the architectural design of the facility, the cost of the materials used, and whether or not the building codes were followed in its construction.
Garba emphasised that the committee's other terms of business include examining if the building code has been followed and whether the building has received official clearance.
The commissioner added the committee has been assigned to make any other recommendation to the government on the unfortunate incident.
The committee, he said, has been given one week to submit its report to the government for immediate and appropriate action.
He said the committee has Engr. Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi, chairman, Policy, Strategy, Implementation and Evaluation Directorate as head of the committee, with commissioners of Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Idris Wada; Justice, M.A . Lawan; Environment, Dr. Kabir Ibrahim Getso.
Other members are Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engr. Mansur Ahmed, a representative of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), while a representative from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) is to serve as secretary of the committee.
