According to a source with knowledge of the case, a Myanmar military court sentenced former leader Aung San Suu Kyi to three years in prison for electoral fraud during the landslide 2020 elections her party won.
According to the source, Suu Kyi, 77, was "sentenced to three years jail with hard labour," and she appeared to be in good health.
Suu Kyi, who has been detained since the putsch last year, has already been found guilty of corruption and a slew of other offences by a secret junta court and given a 17-year prison sentence.
Although international observers judged the election was mainly free and fair, the military claimed significant voting fraud during the November 2020 election, which Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party easily won.
The military has since cancelled the result and said it uncovered more than 11 million instances of voter fraud.
In a speech broadcast last month, Min Aung Hlaing did not mention a date for fresh polls but said they could only be held when the country was “peaceful and stable”.
More than 2,200 people have been killed and over 15,000 arrested in the military’s crackdown on dissent since it seized power, according to a local monitoring group.
