Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has been released by the Abuja-based Appeal Court.
Kanu is being charged by the federal government with 15 counts of treasonable felonies and terrorist offenses in the Federal High Court. These crimes are thought to have been committed due to his pro-IPOB activities.
In light of his kidnapping and extraordinary rendition to Nigeria in flagrant violation of the OAU treaty and protocol on extradition, a three-person panel of the Court of Appeal ruled that the Federal High Court lacked the power to try him.
The court held that the 15-count charge preferred against the Separatist leader did not reveal the place, date, time, and nature of the alleged offenses before being illegally repatriated to Nigeria in clear violation of international accords.
