Samuel Akpan, 32, was placed under house arrest on Monday by the Mararaba Upper Area Court in Nasarawa State after he was accused of abusing a five-year-old girl.

The defendant had to remain in custody until November 23 while the court decided on the defendant's bail conditions, according to the judge, Mohammed Jibril.

The defendant is being tried for procuring a juvenile; he lives in Tudun Wada, Mararaba, Nasarawa State. The crime, however, was disputed by him.

The complainant, Favour Basaki, reported the incident to the "A" Division Police Station in Mararaba on September 30, according to the prosecution's attorney, Hamen Donald, who testified in court.

He said the complainant, a neighbour to the defendant and the victim’s mother, alleged that she left her daughter (victim) in the care of the defendant when she travelled for her sister’s wedding.

However, he said two weeks after the complainant returned, she discovered that her daughter was not feeling well and could not walk properly.

He said the complainant discovered that the defendant had sexually molested her daughter.

He said the offence contravenes section 275 of the Penal Code.
