After a boat carrying them home from an English session sank in the Mekong river, police in Cambodia reported that at least eight children were murdered and three others were missing.

The small boat started taking on water late on Thursday and drowned after being overloaded about 50 metres (160 feet) from its destination in southeast Kandal province, according to Am Thou, the local police commander.

It was a tragic accident. Three children are still missing in the ocean and eight students died, according to Am Thou.

He stated that the casualties, who ranged in age from 12 to 15, were saved together with two adult boat operators and two pupils.

Boat accidents are common in the Southeast Asian nation, with people who live along the river reliant on them for transport.

In 2009, an overloaded river ferry capsized in northeastern Cambodia killing at least 17 passengers.
