The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was criticised by the Oyo State House of Assembly for inviting its members in connection with a supposedly ongoing investigation.
In a letter, the Clerk, Mrs. Yetunde Awe, questioned the legality of the EFCC's invitation of the MPs in light of an ongoing lawsuit that challenges the agency's authority to look into the finances of the legislature.
Awe urged the commission in a letter dated October 11, 2022, a copy of which newsmen saw in Abuja, not to disrespect the court or try to impose its own laws.
She declared that until the outcome of the ongoing case, no assembly member would accept an invitation from the anti-graft organization.
The assembly sued the EFCC earlier this year over its (EFCC’s) planned probe of the house’s finances.
In the suit filed through its lawyer, Musibau Adetunbi (SAN), the assembly is contending among others that by the provision of Section 125 of the Constitution, the EFCC is forbidden from looking into the financial books of the assembly.
It said such power only resides with the Auditor General of the state by virtue of Section 125 of the Constitution.
