Plateau governor signs bill to establish state’s drugs agency

The statute establishing the Plateau State Drugs and Medical Commodities Agency has been signed by Plateau Governor Simon Lalong.

The measure, which has 11 parts and 52 sections, was reportedly signed by the governor on Thursday at the Government House in Jos.

The governor declared that the action would be to the Plateau people's greatest benefit after signing.

He expressed confidence that, with effective implementation, the bill would have the desired effect of facilitating Plateau residents' timely access to high-quality, reasonably priced medications.

He commended the state House of Assembly members for their prompt participation in discussions to guarantee the bill's swift passage.

In highlighting the synopsis of the law, he said its principal function is to serve as the only source of quality, affordable and accessible drugs and other health commodities for the state-owned, tertiary and primary health facilities.

Other functions are; to select, quantify, source, procure, supply, warehouse, sell, distribute, monitor, and control drugs and health products that satisfy the healthcare needs of the people.

It is also to perform supply chain functions that guarantee the availability of the right drugs and health commodities in adequate quantities in the right condition, to be delivered at the right time and place, at the right cost to patients across the state, among others.
