The International Day of the Girl Child 2022 was observed by the United Nations Development Program on Tuesday.

According to a 2011 resolution by the United Nations General Assembly, the International Day of the Girl Child honours girls' strengths and draws attention to the obstacles they encounter.

"Our Time Is Now - Our Rights, Our Future" will be the celebration's theme in 2022.

"All girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life," the UNDP captioned a video that it posted on social media.

“Let’s enable girls to thrive in school, in politics, in business and in all aspects of their lives. Because investing in girls is investing in our common future. #DayOfTheGirl”

Other organisations also took to their social media pages to celebrate girls and commemorate the celebration.

The Youth Voices and Action Initiative tweeted, “In marking the #InternationalDayOfTheGirlChild Kilifi County has brought together girls from all its spheres. We are amplifying Voices of Girls, championing for protection and promotion of their rights.

“Equal representation of Girls in Decision making tables is a milestone in achieving gender equality.”

On its Twitter page, United Nations Children Fund wrote, “Girls with disabilities are twice as likely to experience gender-based violence.

“On #DayoftheGirl, repeat after us: Every girl has a right to be free from ableism and gender-based violence.”
