Mohammed Rabiu, a businessman, was given a six-year prison term by Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna High Court on Tuesday for committing a N20 million scam.
Mr. Rabiu was accused of fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
After Mr. Rabiu admitted to the charge and asked for mercy, the judge condemned him.
Mr. Khobo maintained that the sentences should run consecutively and did not provide the defendant the option of paying a fee.
Additionally, he mandated that the prisoner pay Jamil Hassan, the complainant, N20 million back.
The judge further stated that the defendant would be sentenced to an additional year in prison if he did not pay the required sum.
EFCC Counsel E.K. Garba told the court that in 2020, the convict deceived Abubakar Sani into giving him N20 million to start an automobile business and promised to pay it back in one year.
He said the defendant collected the money, converted it to his personal use and various efforts made by the complainant to get his money back failed.
