Yunusa Ganiyi, a 44-year-old unemployed man, was charged with stealing a tricycle worth N1.9 million on Tuesday before the Ota Magistrates' Court in Ogun.
Mr. Ganiyi, whose address was omitted, is accused of conspiracy and theft.
According to the police prosecutor, E.O. Adaraloye, Mr. Ganiyi and other suspects, who are now at large, committed the crime on October 21 at around 3:00 a.m. in Ewupe, Ogun.
According to Mr. Adaraloye, the defendant reportedly broke a contract with the tricycle's owner, Yusuf Ohunene.
According to him, Mr. Ganiyi bought the tricycle on hire-purchase, sold it, and reported that armed bandits had stolen it.
Mr. Adaraloye claimed that the defendant intentionally took the tricycle rather than paying as agreed.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 390(10a) and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun, 2006.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, A.O Adeyemi, granted the defendant N500,000 bail with a surety.
Ms Adeyemi said the surety must be gainfully employed and should reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
She adjourned the case until November 24 for further hearing.
